Tung oil is a finishing product that gives a solid yet flexible finish that is highly resistant to water and alcohol.
Tung oil is the fastest-drying of plant based oils and will not darken the wood surface during or after application.
This protective finish is recommended for interior wood surfaces such as: cabinets, tables, woodwork, doors and moldings as well as antiques. It can also be used for finishing outdoor furniture.
Tung oil can be used on natural or stained wood.
Application:
Wood surface must be clean and dry. Following the grain, apply a generous quantity of the oil using a brush, cloth or woodworker's polishing cotton mesh. Let stand for 15 to 20 minutes then wipe off the excess. For best results plan on applying between 4 and 7 coats. The application of one coat gives a low-sheen finish. Each additional coat will accentuate it.
Wait 24 hours between each coat (or longer if weather is hot and humid). To obtain a perfectly smooth finish, it may be necessary to sand the surface with very fine steel wool or 600 sandpaper in between coats.
Oil should be completely dry within 24 to 48 hours.
CAUTION: To prevent the risk of spontaneous combustion, all cloths, brushes and tools must be dried in a well-ventilated place before being disposed of or stored. Otherwise store them in a container of water.
Work in a well ventilated space and wear gloves and protective glasses. Keep out of reach of children.
